Welcome back for another great year in the WOHE Library!
This year we are giving a free book to every student for their birthday. Make sure to remind your student to let their teacher know it is their birthday. Then they can come to the library to choose a new book. I want to thank First Books for this remarkable resource for our students. The Scholastic Book Fair will be March 26-29 at the WOHE Library! Additional hours are March 27 3:30-7:30, March 28 3:30-4:30, March 29 3:30-4:30. Students will also visit during the library time.
Author, Judy Young, is coming to visit our school on March 7. She will be meeting with all classes during their specials time!
Self Checkout!
We had a few 4th graders come down and help our 1st graders learn how to check out their own books. I will be sending home a Summer Reading Challenge for your child to complete if they wish. They will need to return it by August 21 to earn a Ice Cream Celebration. I will also attach a link to the Challenge here.
I want to thank everyone who supported our Book Fair this Spring! You helped put a lot of books in the classrooms and library.
The Spring Book Fair will start on April 7 and run through April 13. It will be open from 8:00 am until 3:00 pm each day and until 7:30 pm on April 11 during Fine Arts Night. I hope to see everyone there. If you are unable to attend, you can also order with the Online Book Fair starting on April 2. This is a great fundraiser for our library and it helps to put more books in classrooms. Flyers will be coming home starting on Friday, March 24th. We will be doing a coin drive again for classrooms.
Here is a year in review for our library!
The Orchard Hills Library Media Center is looking for pictures of students reading in their favorite places. Ask a family member or friend to take a picture of you reading in your favorite place. Then print it off and bring it to Mrs. Bryant in the library, OR the picture can be sent to Mrs. Bryant's email. ([email protected]) Our Grandparent Tea was a huge success! Thank you to everyone who came and supported our library program. We were able to collect about $250 for our classrooms to buy books from our Cup Donations.
Scholastic Book Fair will begin on October 28th and end on November 3. We are doing a Coin Drive to get more books in your child's classroom. A flyer will be coming home soon!
Dot Day 2016
Ask your student about Dot Day activities in the library. We watched The Dot being read by the author, Peter Reynolds. We also watched an author visit online. Each grade level did a different activity to celebrate making their mark! Author Visit!
We had author, Micheal Finklea, speak to grades K-4. He was a great inspiration to young writers. Several teachers commented that more of their students wanted to write stories after hearing him speak. His message included don't give up and keep trying to make your writing better. If you get a chance to hear him, you won't be disappointed! Grandparent Breakfast at the Book Fair. It was lots of fun at the Photo Booth!
Thank you to everyone who came. It was a great morning. Read Across America
Every day during the week of February 29-March 4 the students and teachers will be doing something special to celebrate Dr. Seuss' Birthday. There will also be guest readers from our school community that will read to different classes throughout the week! One of our days will be a Hat Day that will cost $.25. The proceeds will benefit the classroom libraries at WOHE. Your student's teacher should be sending home information soon. This week Kindergarten through Second Grade read books about Groundhog's Day-Groundhog Stays Up Late and Double Trouble Groundhog Day. Then they made groundhog puppets. It was a lot of fun.
Kindergarteners learned all about penguins this week? After we read One Cool Friend and used Pebble Go to find information, each student wrote or drew something they learned about penguins on a sticky note and placed it on the penguin.
WOHE students participating in the Hour of Code this week. I sent home a bookmark with the sites so that they can also do this at home.
Don't forget to bring in your pumpkin for our WOHE Library Storybook Pumpkin Patch! They may be brought in any day from October 19-23. They will be on display during the Book Fair.
Make sure to have your student make a guess for the Candy Corn Estimation. The 10 closest guesses win a free book! Ends October 27th.
International Dot Day is September 15th! All of the classes are listening to The Dot by Peter Reynolds and making Trying Dots-something they want to try to do that they think they cannot.
All of the classes are learning how to use the library and take care of their books. We watched a Library Ninja power point in grades 1-3 to review how to take care of our library books. We also read an e-book about Manners in the Library. Third and Fourth graders began checking out books this week and first and second will start next week. Kindergarten is getting close! Ask your 3rd or 4th grader about self checkout. They are doing great with it!
